Singer-songwriter, vocalist, guitarist
From his early beginnings, James has been committed to crafting compelling melodies and thought-provoking lyrics that resonate deeply with listeners.
Miller’s musical success reflects his happy association with some of Canada’s top musical mentors and partners. Initially raised on the singer-songwriter material enjoyed by his father, he first played publicly on the stage of his local high school. He then began playing and writing his own material while studying at McGill. Back in Toronto, he soon got into serious writing, recording and performing for growing audiences in clubs and small theatres around the city.
During that time, million-selling, Juno Award winning producer Eugene Martynec (Bruce Cockburn, Edward Bear, Rough Trade) took Miller under his wing. For two years of monitoring and honing, he taught James the secrets of song-writing and structure. James also made time in his now busy schedule to study voice with renowned vocal teacher Jose Hernandez (vocal coach to Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo, Jane Siberry, and The Nylons).
Through it all, James’ musical path was made smooth by his association with producer David Matheson (CBC, Ron Sexsmith, Moxy Fruvous, Royal Canadian Air Farce). A shared love of music and a long term childhood friendship carved a colourful, musical trail for the two men. David’s versatility on keyboards, guitars, bass, percussion and background vocals joined seamlessly with Miller’s lead vocals, guitar playing and harmonies. David’s seasoned expertise with many styles helped raise James’ own repertoire to a new level. Four albums later, they continue to create an exciting sound that blends musical genres, enriching James’ smooth, melodic songs.
Honey Love is Miller's fourth studio album, showcasing his evolution as an artist. The groove-oriented songs blend seamlessly with influences from roots, pop, rock, blues, and bossa nova, creating a rich and diverse listening experience on this mature and very positive album. Throughout the project, listeners are taken on a journey through Miller's compelling vocals that express themes of love, yearning, justice, and togetherness. The album features great rhythms, harmonious arrangements, and tasteful solos that punctuate the skilled full production by David Matheson, making this collection of music highly accessible to a wide audience.
“David and I were so spontaneous and at ease together. We’ve been friends for so many years that we facilitate each other’s creativity and we share an intuitive sense of where we are going with a song. It’s a really enjoyable process.”
The single ‘Honey Love’ features James performing with Juno-nominated Glenn Marais and his band The Mojo Train. “What a soulful band to perform this song with. We had played it live together, and people were singing along with great energy, so the guys knew exactly where we were going with it in the studio.”
James has recorded several duets with Toronto jazz singer Lori Cullen. Percussionist and singer Craig Riley has been the steadiest of allies for James, performing seamlessly together in the Toronto club scene and on many recordings.
A veteran of many outdoor festivals such as the Philadelphia Folk Festival, The Hillside Folk Festival, The Newmarket Jazz Festival and others, James has also had numerous local television and print media appearances. He was featured on YorkRegion.com in the article Singer/songwriter records dream album highlighting his journey as a singer/songwriter during the release of his first album, Endless Open Sky.
James has also been a busy traveler over the years, visiting and exploring fifty countries around the globe. As an active and inspiring elementary school teacher, James and colleague Heather Stevens organized the Voices for Africa choir concerts in support of the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s efforts to “Turn the Tide” of HIV in Africa. Over 4000 local students have participated in 20 of these exciting events which have raised over $200,000 and included 30 local schools.
“This has been a small victory for global awareness in our local youth, facilitated by so many of their incredible teachers.”
Students found the Voices for Africa concerts to be incredibly impactful. As quoted in the Newmarket Era:
"This concert meant a lot because even though I don't know those children in Africa, and they don't know me, I know that what I did helped make a difference for them. It must be scary for the orphans whose parents have died of HIV." — Mara Theofilaktidis
"At first I felt nervous going on stage in front of a big audience, it was my first time, but after a while I felt like I was really doing something with my time helping others. I think a lot of the students felt just like I did, after the show the students were confident and happy that they really made a difference." — Tina Zeinali
James has received several awards, FACTOR grants, and formal acknowledgement from Stephen Lewis (former U.N. Special Envoy for Aids in Africa) including the Toronto Star’s Top 100 Teachers of the Year and was featured several times in York Region media and television.
